In different countries you can find the public telephone book out in the street.
In Lagos people run up to five separate businesses at the same time and have just as many mobile phones. Because they can’t physically be at all their businesses at once, the entire public domain is plastered with notices: call the plumber, call the welder, call the car mechanic. Next to a couple of plants and flowers: call the florist. Sometimes the message comes packed in a complete street installation, such as the composition of a door and ladders that bears a carpenter’s mobile number.
In Bishkek it are mobile numbers for English lessons, business courses and job offers, mostly telemarketing as selling beauty creams, which attract attention.
Sao Paulo is perhaps one of the last cities to have landline phone booths in the street. ‘Big ear’ they are called. Every Big Ear is plastered with stickers, all girl names and their mobile phone numbers. Although in Brazil it is not sure whether Jessica is a woman or a man.
