Rotterdam -
The Tarwewijk Rotterdam. Harbourfront with scrap metal. Depot for trader in king size chains and anchors. Lino Hellings 1th of November 2010
The Tarwewijk translated is the Wheat district. This special harbour - the Maashaven - is the place where the grain is stored in silos. It still holds Meneba and Quacker Oats as factories for flour and oats. Rotterdam was till recent days the biggest harbour in the world. It is still quite big. Containerships from all over the world are overloaded in trains, trucks and tall ships to supply the rest of Europe. In this harbour - the Maashaven - most of the men of the Tarwewijk used to work. Not any more. The men from the neighbourhood with their bike in the hand we meet here, roam around for nostalgic reasons.
