Detroit -
An abandoned building on Chene St. in Detroit has been turned into an urban canvas by an artist. The painting presents cartoon characters engaged in violence and drugs. It was created on boards covering windows of a store that used to be owned by a Polish American businessman Zarembski (his name is still visible above the windows). Detroit has a long tradition of providing inspiration to artists and musicians, most prominent among them were Motown singers and techno DJs. Current deterioration of the city and violence that ravishes it have been definitely noticed by local and out-of-town artists who use Art as a form of social commentary about the state of American inner cities. This street art on display is located in Poletown, Detroit’s near east side. It used to be mainly Yugoslavian and Polish American neighborhood before Poles and Yugoslavs migrated to the suburbs.
