Detroit -
Adris Nia, 60, grew up in Detroit. His parents moved here from the south of the US to take government positions in the first half of the 20th century. They were part of the black “great migration†from the south of the US - they and countless other African Americans moved north to escape discrimination and Jim Crow laws and to look for jobs in booming industries like car manufacturing in Detroit. Adris Nia joined the stream of human migration when he moved out of Detroit after graduating form school here. He lived in places as diverse as Jamaica and Michigan’s Upper Peninsula (one of the coldest places in the US). His journey is somehow typical of other middle class blacks who have could afford to and did move out of the city in the last decades, following in the footsteps of whites. Nia has recently returned to Detroit to take care of his elderly parents. Detroit, Marcin Szczepanski
