Lagos -
On the edges of the Lagos lagoon near Lekki, one of Lagos’ wealthiest areas and a “gated community†seemingly trying to isolate itself from the rest of the city, a child plays with a broken torch while his family’s washing dries on the heap of firewood near his ramshackle home. Taking into account Nigeria’s ranking of 158 out of 177 on the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Human Poverty Index, improving the desperate conditions in which so many of Nigeria’s children exist continues to represent a seemingly insurmountable challenge. The “hidden forces†contributing to this problem are too numerous to mention here.
